Chess Victoria is pleased to announce that Alana Chibnall has been appointed President of Chess Victoria, following the resignation of Peter Clark. This marks an important moment in our organisation’s history as leadership transitions from one dedicated volunteer to another with a long-standing passion for chess in Victoria and beyond.
Peter Clark has served Chess Victoria with energy and commitment, guiding the organisation through several challenging years and overseeing the continued development of competitive and community chess across the state. His work has included strengthening connections between clubs, supporting the growth of junior programs, and ensuring that Chess Victoria events remained of a high standard. On behalf of the entire chess community, we extend our sincere thanks to Peter for his leadership, dedication, and many contributions. We wish him all the very best in his future pursuits.
Stepping into the role, Alana Chibnall brings both international recognition and a deep connection to the Victorian chess community. As a Woman FIDE Master (WFM) and an International Arbiter, she has already played a vital role in administering major tournaments, mentoring players, and fostering fair play. Her recent work as Chief Arbiter for state championships and open events has earned her the respect of both players and organisers alike.
Alana’s vision as President is to build on Chess Victoria’s strong foundation while driving innovation and inclusivity. She is passionate about broadening participation in chess, particularly among young players, women, and underrepresented groups. She has expressed a strong desire to continue nurturing grassroots programs while also ensuring that Victoria’s elite players receive the opportunities and support they need to excel at national and international levels.
Her appointment represents continuity, but also fresh energy. With her dual background as both a competitive master and a skilled arbiter, Alana understands the game from multiple perspectives. This will be invaluable as she works closely with clubs, schools, volunteers, and partner organisations to deliver a chess community that is welcoming, vibrant, and ambitious.
Alana has also highlighted the importance of improving communication and transparency within Chess Victoria, ensuring members feel informed, included, and valued. Plans for the year ahead include reviewing tournament structures, expanding coaching and training opportunities, and exploring new ways to make chess accessible through digital platforms.
As President, Alana will also play a crucial role in representing Victoria at the national level, working with other state associations and the Australian Chess Federation to advance the game across the country.
We invite all members of the Victorian chess community to join us in congratulating Alana Chibnall on her appointment as President. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding service of Peter Clark, whose efforts leave a lasting legacy for the organisation.
With Alana at the helm, Chess Victoria looks forward to a new chapter of growth, inclusivity, and success.
